Creslane “Walking School Bus”

This May, Creslane Elementary School became the first school in the Lane County SRTS network to host a Walking School Bus - an adult-supervised walking group to school. Nearly 30 students gathered at Holt Park to “walk to school with Principal Halley”; they were joined by County Commissioner Heather Buch and Creswell Mayor Amy Knudson.

Creslane was amongst schools from all 50 states and more than 40 countries that organized students, parents, and staff to walk or bike to school in celebration of "Walk and Roll to School Month". The event, which takes place every May and October, seeks to demonstrate that walking and rolling can be a fun, healthy, and safe way for children to get to school.

Walking School Buses and other Safe Routes activities also highlight the importance of investing in infrastructure that supports active transportation. Accessing funds for crosswalk enhancements and sidewalk improvements is an ongoing struggle for many rural communities, Creswell included, and Lane County Safe Routes to School hopes to show the community's support for walking and rolling with events such as May’s Walking School Bus.

Though some students may face barriers like infrastructure or distance that make walking directly from home to school impossible, meeting at Holt Park gave families a chance to park then walk the remainder of the way. The Walking School Bus was such a success, Creslane plans to continue the activity in the fall.
